POMPEI from Salerno and the Amalfi Coast

Pompeii Excavation Tour from Salerno Discovering Pompeii, from the Amalfi Coast

ID: ROC2024-POMP

Depart from Salerno and the Amalfi Coast to discover the ancient city of Pompeii.

Our Guided Tour of the Pompeii Excavations will take you to discover one of the most beautiful cities in the whole of Campania, which has become famous worldwide for the archaeological excavations that brought to light the ancient city buried by ashes and lapilli due to a tremendous eruption of the volcano Vesuvius, in 79 AD.

Ancient Pompeii, excavated for about four-fifths of its urban territory, is the most suggestive and famous archaeological site in the world.

With its 44 hectares of area restored to light and with the remarkable state of conservation, due to the particular burial caused by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, the excavations give us back to the habits, lifestyles and splendor of the Roman population. The ancient city of Pompeii had an elliptical plan, was surrounded by walls and towers and divided into neighborhoods by straight streets (cardi and decumani) intersecting at right angles. Many of the major public monuments are concentrated around the main Forum, where there are, among other things, the Temple of Jupiter, the temples of Apollo and Vespasian, the Macellum, the Eumachia Building, the Basilica and two honorary

arches.

Other large buildings stand out in the urban fabric, such as the Forum Baths, the Central Baths and the Stabian Baths, which have been beautifully preserved, the Teatro Grande and the magnificent Teatro Piccolo (or Odeon), the elegant Temple of Isis and the Amphitheater.

Among the rich houses, the Villa of the Mysteries shine with its fabulous frescoes, the House of the Faun, for the elegance of its architecture and the famous mosaics that embellish it, and the House of the Vettii, whose wall paintings are of vital importance for the knowledge of the various Roman artistic styles.

There are also countless businesses, from shops (tabernae) to taverns (cauponae), from bars (thermopolia) to dry cleaners (fullonicae), many of which are lined up along the Way of Abundance. Also on display are the casts of the bodies of some victims, a moving testimony

of the tragedy.
